In the javelin event, the athletes throw the javelin as far as possible. Originally used in hunting and war, the javelin has been part of the athletics since 708 B.C., when an olive wood javelin was thrown in two events: with a sling and at a target.
In the 19th century, the Scandinavians developed the modern sport of javelin throwing. It was included for the first time in the track and field championships in England in 1906. In the modern era, it made its Olympic debut at the London Games in 1908 and the women's javelin was included in the Los Angeles games in 1932. |
