Kelps and Wracks - mainly found along the West Coast of Scotland, the Hebrides and the Orkneys although they also grow on the coast of Brittany and Norway. Kelps are part of the Secies Laminaria of the Laminariaceae family, they are large olive-green to brown algae. Wracks are smaller plants and the common species are Fucus serratus, Fucus vesiculosis and Ascophyllum nodosum. |

Kelps and Wracks contain a large proportion of a mucilaginous substance called algin (fucin), which is the calcium salt of alginic acid. They also have an ash content of 1.6 - 3.0% which contains iodides, chlorides and bromides. The iodine present (0.04) forms an important medicinal constituent and is an active ingredient in this product. |
